Jimmy Wales and The People’s Operator launch new social network

New ad-free social network enhances mobile social good platform as research results show more than half of UK consumers give to charity regularly

LONDON, JULY 21st 2015: The Peoples Operator (TPO) together with TPO Chairman and Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, is helping to change lives for the better by launching a new social network to complement TPO’s mobile service and harness the power of its members to deliver social good. Believing that small actions can add up to a big difference, the TPO Community will bring people together while at the same time supporting good causes.

TPO invites people to join the TPO Community at The TPO Community is a new general interest ad-free social network that is a simple way to donate online and is open to everyone for free. The TPO Community is supported by TPO’s mobile service, where customers direct 10 percent of their monthly mobile phone bill to a social cause of their choice, at no extra cost to them – thus turning the every-day activity of using a mobile into a way to make a big difference.

An ad-free social network with purpose
The results of a recent UK consumer study commissioned by TPO* confirms we are a nation of givers. More than half of UK consumers, 51 percent, had given to charity in the past month, whilst only eight percent choose not to give to charity. Interestingly, almost three quarters (73 percent) of millennials (those aged 16-24) agreed that they would give to causes if they were socially connected to them – a key factor in the vision of the TPO Community.
“We wanted to provide a way for people to connect with both their friends and the causes they care about in an ad-free social space that works for them,” continued Mr Wales. “The TPO Community brings these together so that members can learn more about causes, follow them, donate and share their support with their friends.”
More than just a social network, the TPO Community combines social sharing with the ability to donate directly to participating causes – and TPO will pass all proceeds directly to the cause without taking any commissions. The ad-free space gives people a way to join forces with others to make the most of how they give back to the causes that matter to them; critical as over 60 percent of consumers want to give on their own terms.
The study also found that personal connections lie at the heart of our kindness and are the main driver to giving, with 40 percent selecting causes based on these connections, the most common influence when deciding to donate. This is followed by the comfort that donations are reaching the front line of the cause, an important factor for more than one in four respondents (27 percent).
Whilst millennials are more regularly seeking ways to connect and engage with causes online, the majority of people connect to causes through their desire to do good; nearly three in five of us (59 percent) wanted to help others in need, as opposed to moral obligation (24 percent) and peer pressure (9 percent).
